The November 1st Issue of the Islander

It seems like “down” was the operative word around Mount Desert Island lately and not just because of the falling barometric pressure as Hurricane Sandy worked its way up the coast.

In a somewhat ironic twist, the only maritime casualty of Down East Maine’s not-so-big blow was a barge normally used to salvage other vessels when they run into trouble. The Tubby went down at its mooring in Bar Harbor on Monday night.

Area mudflats have been shut down to clamming and other shellfish harvesting due to the expected runoff of rain from the storm although roads and a campground in Acadia National Park that were closed down on Monday night have reopened.

Bar Harbor fisherman Max Blandford is being credited with saving the life of a woman who leaned against a railing on the town pier and fell over backwards into the sea. Firefighters in that same town were able to keep a house on Ledgelawn Avenue from completely burning down when an electrical problem sparked a fire in a bathroom.

And, last but not least, this is the weekend we all get to wind down and enjoy an extra hour of sleep as we “Fall Back,” and turn the clocks back an hour on Saturday night.

Not all news this week, however, was a “downer.” The Mount Desert Island High School Girls Cross Country team did not fall down on the job as they ran their way to first place again at the State Championships in Belfast.

And, to the joy of most citizens, next Tuesday is finally election day which means not only will we finally pick new leaders, but the non-stop barrage of negative television spots, ads, mailings and robocalls soon will be over.

All that, other news and views, money-saving ads, food, fun and way more value than you can find anywhere else for only $1, in this week’s Mount Desert Islander.

The Mount Desert Islander is located at 310 Main Street in Bar Harbor, Maine.  For more information please contact us at (207) 288-0556 or e-mail info@mdislander.com
