The Criterion Theatre group is facing eviction from its historic Art Deco building in downtown Bar Harbor following more than a year of events that have left building owner and tenant at loggerheads. And folks are coping with the aftermath of two fires on Mount Desert Island last week – one of them arson. Get all the details in this week’s Mount Desert Islander.
Meanwhile, the island is gearing up for a busy holiday weekend, with good weather forecast and a parade in Bar Harbor followed by a festival at the town ballfield on Saturday; and a concert and fireworks on Sunday night, July 4. A Bar Harbor icon – Razor Ray, the town’s only remaining barber – is celebrating 50 years in business, and perhaps contemplating retirement. And in Southwest Harbor, folks are working to help restore the worldwide population of monarch butterflies. While out on Islesford, one man is doing his part to help victims of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, one mini-golf hole at a time.
In Trenton, the town is joining residents in opposing a proposed 50-acre oyster farm in Goose Cove. And police are warning people to lock their doors following a rash of thefts.
