ECONOMIC INTEREST …
Friday, March 13, 2009

Nearly 100 people turned out at the Somesville Fire Station on Monday to participate in an economic forum held by Democratic Reps. Elsie Flemings of Bar Harbor and Hanna Pingree of North Haven. Panelists reviewed a number of state and federal programs including SCORE, the Service Corps of retired Executives, available to help area businesses start and grow. Area bankers also explained how to best weather hard economic times. Joe Murphy, president and CEO of Bar Harbor Banking and Trust, urged people struggling financially to talk with their bankers earlier rather than later. “We seem to have the most communication at the end of the process and then it’s too late,” he said. He noted the bank helped nearly 50 fishermen restructure boat payments this year. Residents asked questions about the program and also urged the elected officials to assist the economy by reducing regulations and fees. “The best way to help me is to let me keep more of my money,” one man said.—EARL BRECHLIN PHOTO
