ELLSWORTH — Area auto repair shops learned they might be paying $2.5 million or more in remediation costs from a decades-old oil spill, which has contaminated groundwater at three sites on Route 1A near Boggy Brook Road. Those businesses are on the hook, officials said, even though they disposed of the oil with a licensed facility. |

MOUNT DESERT — Selectmen here approved a late addition to the town warrant at their Monday meeting. Representatives of St. Mary’s by the Sea church came before the board to request that the town support a warrant article, that upon passage, would allow the church to construct a new storm sewer. The 12-inch-diameter storm drain would be within the town’s right of way on the South Shore Road and the Huntington Road. Updating the storm sewer would be a benefit to the town and would facilitate adequate water drainage at the problematic site, said public works director Tony Smith.

Nearly 100 people turned out at the Somesville Fire Station on Monday to participate in an economic forum held by Democratic Reps. Elsie Flemings of Bar Harbor and Hanna Pingree of North Haven. Panelists reviewed a number of state and federal programs including SCORE, the Service Corps of retired Executives, available to help area businesses start and grow. Area bankers also explained how to best weather hard economic times. Joe Murphy, president and CEO of Bar Harbor Banking and Trust, urged people struggling financially to talk with their bankers earlier rather than later. “We seem to have the most communication at the end of the process and then it’s too late,” he said. He noted the bank helped nearly 50 fishermen restructure boat payments this year. Residents asked questions about the program and also urged the elected officials to assist the economy by reducing regulations and fees. “The best way to help me is to let me keep more of my money,” one man said.—EARL BRECHLIN PHOTO |
