ACADIA NAT’L PARK — Three peregrine chicks at the Precipice and three at Valley Cove have fledged. Of the four chicks, born at Jordan Cliffs, three died. The fourth appeared ready to fly, but spotters have not seen the chick in the last several days, said resource management specialist Bruce Connery. When Mr. Connery went to band the chicks at Jordan Cliffs, he found two dead chicks and the other two in poor shape. “It appears that the adults are either very young or that one of them died. It would be very hard for one adult to feed four young chicks,” said Mr. Connery. He attributes the death of the third chick to malnutrition or starvation. As far as spotters can determine, there is only one adult at Beech Cliff, although earlier in the season there appeared to be a pair of birds there. |
