BAR HARBOR — A little yoga, a lot of running and even a wedding marked the first-ever Run MDI weekend.

Sponsored by Eden Athletics, the weekend was open to runners from across the state and beyond as a celebration of running on Mount Desert Island. The weekend runs attracted roughly 60 people, 39 of whom belong to Eden Athletics, with the remaining crowd comprised of nonmembers from on and off the island.

“I would say it was a big success,” said Christine Ganz, president of Eden Athletics.

Events kicked off on Friday with a run around Eagle Lake and resumed Saturday morning with multiple runs and the first meeting of First Striders, a running group for those new to the sport. The first meeting attracted four would-be runners who were provided with basic information for getting started.

“It’s running 101 for those interested in running,” Ganz said.

Those who take part in First Strides will follow an easy progression directed by the experienced Eden Athletics runners. The group will offer information on a range of topics, from gear to nutrition.

“People are there for all different reasons, but mostly to get fit,” Ganz said.

First Strides will meet at 8:30 a.m. the first Saturday of every month at the Eagle Lake parking lot. Those interested are encouraged to begin attending at any point during the summer.

“The more the merrier,” Ganz said. “We’re assuming you’re starting from ground zero, so nobody should be intimidated.”

Saturday’s activities also included a run on the carriage trails around Jordan Pond House. Runners chose different paths and completed various distances, but camaraderie was the common denominator.

“It just seemed as though, as you were running, people were on different routes and paces,” Ganz said. “We kept seeing new faces. There was nobody running alone. There were runners everywhere.”

Several runners then completed a one-mile downhill run just to see what it is like to run fast down a hill for a mile.

“Turns out it was really fun,” Ganz said.

The run finished at the Seal Harbor beach where Eden member Steve Calder led a stretching clinic for roughly 11 people.

“He’s sort of the team Gumby,” Ganz laughed.

The evening concluded with a barbecue.

Sunday morning kicked off with a bang with a wedding atop Cadillac Mountain. The groom, Bob Carroll from Buffalo, ran with Ganz, Brian Hubbell, and others from the Mount Desert Island YMCA to the mountaintop ceremony to marry Becky Heuer of Buffalo.

“It was really very pretty,” Ganz said.

A group of runners then completed a course in Southwest Harbor before the closing ceremonies at Jack Russell’s Steakhouse in Bar Harbor.

“It was a great weekend,” Ganz said. “Brian [Hubbell] was the guy. This was his brainchild. He conceived it and organized it in a way nobody but Brian could do. Our hats off to him.”

Ganz said the group is hoping to make Run MDI weekend an annual tradition.

“For the first year this was a good turnout,” she said. “It was a whole lot of fun, which was the whole idea.”
